BACKGROUND:
As part of our Key Stage 3 First Steps Careers Day, Bourne End Academy is organising a STEM Career Showcase for our Year 8s. We’re looking from employers/employees working in the exciting world of science, technology, engineering and maths to give one hour of their time to share their own career journeys with students – challenging stereotypes about just who can follow a career in STEM, and revealing opportunities within this growing industry sector.

We know from research that “young adults who recall four or more encounters with employers while at school are five times less likely to be NEET (not in education, employment or training) and earn on average 18% more than peers who recall no such activities” – so you’ll be helping to set students on the right path.

WHAT SHOULD YOU SAY?
It’s a great opportunity for students to experience the world of work and find out why you chose your particular profession, what subjects you studied, what your day-to-day job is like and how they can follow in your footsteps. Your careers talk could therefore provide answers to some of the following:

 What is the STEM sector and how do you fit into it? (You mgith find this useful – http://www.wherestemcantakeyou.co.uk/ . Also see p12 – 13 and other pages about STEM roles in Buckinghamshire on the report here https://bbf.uk.com/news/labour-market-intelligence-update-buckinghamshire-january-2018 )
 Describe your own career journey – how did you choose what to do?
 What subjects did you study at school/university/college/apprenticeship?
 What are job prospects like in your industry? Could you provide an average starting salary and top end salary?
 How do you get into your industry? What are the usual entry pathways?
 What is a working day like? Do you travel/work outside the office?
 What training have you undertaken? Do you belong any professional bodies?
 What are the challenges and rewards in your career?

Above all, we’d like the talk to be motivational and encourage students to aspire to be the very best they can be. Please keep it interactive, encourage questions and include stories and anecdotes that young people can relate to.

LOGISTICS:
We’d like you to deliver your careers talk twice, repeating the same talk back to back to two different classes. Each class will have around 30 students in it. Each session will be 30 minutes, with you speaking for around 20 minutes followed by 5-10 minutes of questions. Each class will therefore find out the career journeys of two employers from different STEM roles.

You are welcome to pair up with a colleague for your talk – just let us know who will be coming.

TIMINGS:
Tuesday 26 March 2019: arrival 1pm for 1.10pm start, ending 2.10pm.
