Sharing best practice: team around careers

Is everyone on board with careers at your school? Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School recently held a Team Around Careers meeting attended by all stakeholders in the school leading anything in relation to careers.

These included, Headteacher Kay Mountfield, the SENCo, Heads of Year, Head of Sixth Form, the Librarian (and Head of extra-curricular STEM), the Careers Leader and their Enterprise Coordinator.

Each benchmark was unpicked; the school’s progress in relation to each discussed; and initial discussions held on finding solutions for outstanding issues – such as for Gatsby Benchmark 3 creating the most effective mechanism for students to reflect on their careers experiences (potentially using UniFrog to record encounters during form time).

For Gatsby Benchmark 6, the team considered how existing trips could be tweaked to enable students to experience a workplace, looking at both the potential opportunities and the possible limitations.

By bringing together a Team Around Careers, the school was able to honestly reflect on progress made and establish their future priorities. It also ensured that all key stakeholders had a clear understanding of the benchmarks and were therefore in a better position to support their implementation.
